According to Feeding America, 1 in 6 Americans face hunger every day. Within Los Angeles County the numbers are some of the highest. In 2011, 1,749,600 people in LA County were classified as food insecure. Food Insecurity, as defined by USDA, is the lack of access to enough food needed to maintain an active healthy life. This lack of access stems from a variety of reasons including lack of money and/or time, food desserts, and instability. Because of the variety of issues causes food insecurity, food insecure statue is fluid and constantly changing.
To combat the growing hunger within our own communities, NCP created a food outreach program that seeks to address the issues of hungers and lack of access. At various times throughout the month, our member congregations are hosting food pantries that provide hot meals and bagged groceries to all who come. Bagged groceries contain enough food to feed a family of four for about a week and include a variety of healthy options. These distributions also serve as the first steps for many of clients to introduced to other services offered by our churches or partners in ministry.
