Inadequate education and improper preparation are primary causes of unemployment and are key contributions for the perpetuation of poverty. Inner-city schools are over-crowded and under-funded. Despite their efforts, most teachers haven't time to provide individual academic tutoring and coaching for their students. This lack of personal attention is compounded as nearly 60 percent of Los Angeles' inner-city families are currently administered by single parent.
Focusing on eight basic academic disciplines, one-on-one instruction has reached thousands of children and youth, improving their proficiency and elevating their self-esteem. Your contributions to this effort are being used to compensate teachers and to purchase learning materials and school supplies.
Lack of ready access to computers and the related gap in computer skills is common among poor and low-income inner-city families, thus limiting their opportunities for eventual employment. By establishing computer labs we find ourselves successfully addressing this issue with impressive results. Your financial support provides for the maintenance, upgrading and expansion of these labs and prolongs NCP's ability to offer this vital training.
Our formal programs include Casa Angelica Safe Haven, a multi-faceted activity project for youth; Focus on Youth Interests (FYI), also geared to the needs of young people: Men of Imani (Faith) Rites of Passage, a Christian guidance program for boys and teens entering manhood; Men of Holy Trinity mentoring Program, where professional men share their experiences and extend direction to young men concerning life's coping challenges and careers.
NCP congregations also provide much-need child-care, pre-school, and elementary school services with the help of students and faculty from UCLA and USC. NCP Coalition members also offer counseling for children, at-risk youth, young adults, parents, and people with substance abuse issues. The congregations also provide U.S. Citizenship classes, Karate instruction, and preparedness sessions for high school students scheduled to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the CBEST.
These projects and programs, which are centered in promoting self-improvement, self-discipline, family assistance, education, and productive citizenship, and are designed to meet many important needs. Your financial support of these programs provides for materials, supplies, refreshments, transportation, Hot meals, and helps keep hundreds of young people off the streets during summer break and after regular school hours.
